Majority of Nigerian students are familiar with the acronym ASUU as their known mostly for always causing set back in the smooth running of academic activities. This set back is usually as a result of something called ASUU strike. This as a result gives rise to students now spending more the normal years that is to be spent when taking a course.
No wonder nowadays, students are now concerned about knowing if their school is under ASUU or not. First off, let’s see what ASUU is all about, then the list of schools (universities) under ASUU.
What is ASUU?
ASUU is an acronym for Academic Staff Union of Universities, and as the name implies it is a body for all academic staff in the University, so you will observe that each University have more like a local Union of Academic Staff (We call this, University’s Chapter of ASUU), and this is when you here them say UNIBEN ASUU, or UI ASUU, that is University of Benin Academic Staff Union or University of Ibadan Academic Staff Union.
All these various chapters can go on strike independently, but they all come together to form the National Body – ASUU, which is currently headed by their Chairman ‘Professor Osodeke’. This body was founded in the year 1978.
As a Union, they fight for their welfare, such as payment of salaries and allowances to Staff, and the only way they achieve this is by embarking on Strikes.
